She was thirteen years old and had never been touched.
They had met at school that day, and she'd been surprised when he'd called her the same night. He was a friend's boyfriend, why would he call her? Still, she was just naive enough to think nothing of it. This guy just wanted to be friends. Maybe part of her knew. She didn't get that much attention from boys, so she didn't give it much thought.
They spoke for hours. He laughed at all her jokes. He seemed so nice. She just didn't know enough about life and love to know that he was flirting, not being friendly. She was flirting too, whether or not she could admit to it or was even conscious of it.
They had a day off school coming up. He said she should come over to his place, they could play video games with his brother. He said his dad would be around because he wasn't working that day.
Again, too naive, too dumb to realize that this was a bad idea, she agreed readily, and when the day came, she was there as planned. When she'd arrived, he'd said his father had gone out. The brother was there, but left within five minutes of her arrival.
They were alone.
He brought her to his bedroom, which wasn't that unusual, given that most teenager's only personal space is their bedroom. At least that's what she though at the time.
He showed her all the various holes in his walls, telling her stories of who or what had enraged him, causing his violent outbursts. Kind of emphasizing on how he couldn't really control himself when he was angry.
She had begun to grow uneasy.
He'd stopped one of his stories short, his attention suddenly directed at her. He'd whispered: you're beautiful.
Her heart sank. The reality of the situation dawned on her. He had been flirting and he expected something to happen today.
She wasn't ready for this. Not here, not now, not with him.
He licked his lips and moved towards her. She tensed. She wanted to say no, but didn't feel like she could. He leaned in and kissed her. The kiss was okay, so she thought maybe she could do this, it wouldn't be so bad. Within seconds though, he was reaching for her belt. She froze, still unable to utter the word "no".
He popped the button on her jeans, pulled down the zipper, and put his hand down her panties, roughly. She jerked, startled. She was terrified. She wanted desperately wanted him to stop, but her eyes were fixed on a hole in the wall that was close to her face and the stories about his anger issues. She couldn't move, or speak: she was paralyzed.
He pulled down her torn jeans, tights and panties in one sweep. Stuck around her ankles, she was bound by her own clothing.
She was exposed and embarrassed. She wondered why she'd worn the ugly beige granny panties her mom had bought her. Then again, she had not been expecting to show them to anyone.
He spread her legs with his hands, slamming his fingers into her, pounding her hard, his fist punching her with every thrust. The pain was unbearable, and she wanted to scream, but she couldn't even do that.
What would happen if she angered him?
She gritted her teeth and kept her eyes fixed on that hole in the wall, enduring the pain, unable to tell him to stop. After several minutes, he lay himself down on top of her. She could feel "it"', hard against her thigh.
Her mind raced. This couldn't be happening. This couldn't be the way she would lose her virginity. Her legs clamped shut, and he tried to pry them apart with his. She didn't budge though, her knees seemed to be cemented together.
After what seemed like an eternity of him trying to pry her legs open, she finally mustered the courage to speak:
-Cedric?
-What?
-No.
And that was it. He pulled off her, slowly. She lay there, still frozen. He got up, pulled up his pants, and lit a cigarette. When he turned around and saw her still lying there, he barked "well get dressed already!"
She quickly got her pants up, her tights bunching in all the wrong places. It didn't matter though, she was still a million times more comfortable than she had been a minute ago. He was distant now.
They chatted for a few more minutes, but the joy had left the conversation, and she could feel that he was tense, and despite what had just transpired, she still wanted his approval.
She left, relieved that she'd been able to say no, and that he had stopped. She walked home feeling shamed. She'd just been with another girl's boyfriend, even if it had been horrible. She could still feel him, "down there", she could still feel the pain of his punches. She knew she'd been stupid. She knew she shouldn't have gone. She knew she should have spoken up.
Still, she felt like she'd just been violated.
She didn't call anyone that weekend. She curled up in bed and watched TV. She was sad, and felt dirty, used, dumb. Then the phone rang on Sunday night. It was his girlfriend.
He'd told her about their "date". Told her she'd come on to him, that he'd said no.
Her heart sank. She couldn't even tell the truth, he hadn't really done anything wrong, she had let him do all those things. She had kissed him back. She had gone to his house.
How could she explain how stupid she'd been? How could she explain the irrational fear that had paralyzed her?
She was shunned by her friends that Monday, and had never felt so alone in her life. Her innocence had died, and she would never view boys the same way again. While it was clear to her that she was at blame for not speaking up, she also wondered how he hadn't sensed that there'd been a problem. When he'd laid on top of her, her legs clamped shut, why had he tried to pry them apart with this own? Shouldn't he have know she didn't want him to? Shouldn't that have sent a clear message?
Deep down, she knew the answer was yes. He was older, and experienced, and took advantage of her.
That never changed the fact that she hated herself for going there that day, hated herself for not speaking up, and hated that this had been her first sexual encounter.

Creative Writing Exercise: Short Story
Pin It

I asked the people of my Facebook page to help me out with a little writing exercise I wanted to try just to get my creative juices flowing.
I asked them to give me a name, a place and an activity I would then use to create a short story.
This is part one in a series, feel free to leave a comment here, and I'll try to write about it soon.
So my words today are Charlotte, Pensacola beach, and watching Football... Here goes:
Charlotte had grown up in a small town, one where it was hard to get into trouble, because every one knew who you were, and your entire family too.
She'd never really minded though, she was a star in her little hometown. Head cheerleader, homecoming queen, girlfriend of the quarterback, heck, she'd even held every starring role in the town Christmas show for at least ten years running.
High school had ended a long time ago though, and her quarterback boyfriend had hurt his knee in a dumb drinking and water surfing accident, so now he spent a lot more time watching football than he did playing it, and had become unbearable as his frustrations over loosing his childhood dreams just kept growing.
He'd been staying out later and later, leaving her alone and frustrated. This was not the life she'd envisioned when they were in high school.
He'd come home smelling of booze and smoke, and she knew where he went, because she'd found the matchbook in his pocket. It was a strip club one town over, where they went when they wanted to eat a fancy dinner or shop at a mall.
Their sex life used to be great. They could talk openly about anything, would do it several times a day some days, flirt openly all the time. Now he never noticed a new hair cut, or new clothes. Not even new lingerie.
One day when the cell phone he'd left on the counter before collapsing in a drunken stupor wouldn't stop buzzing, she picked it up.
There was a text message from some girl named Jazz. Apparently, she really hoped he'd had a good time yesterday, because she was really in to him. Wanted to know when she could see him next. Signed it with little X's and O's.
Well isn't that sweet? She thought to herself as anger and hurt stirred in the pit of her stomach. She opened the phone and nearly exploded when she was confronted by a slew of messages, to and from, all flirty, and some pretty explicit.
All this time, he'd been ignoring her, but going to someone else? Been a jerk at home but Prince Charming to some girl named "Jazz" of all things?
That was it! She'd been thinking about leaving him for quite a while now, but this was it. This was the push she'd needed. She grabbed his credit card and went online. Booked herself a beautiful trip to Pensacola Beach, Florida; first class air fare and a five star hotel.
She packed her bags and left him a note.
"Jazz texted. Wants to know if you enjoyed last night and is really excited about seeing you again.
That's good, because I'm hoping I never see you again. I've booked myself a wonderful trip on your credit card and if you dare to cancel it, I'll tell the whole town exactly where you hang out and what you did.
Won't that make Sundays at church fun?
Charlotte
PS: the irony of how much you hate jazz music is not lost on me."
After that day, Charlotte only ever went back to the small town to visit her family and friends. She met a man on the plane on her way to Pensacola Beach, and it was love at first sight, even though she didn't really know it at the time. She'd thought he'd just be her rebound guy, but they'd been inseparable ever since, and were planing a lavish wedding for the fall.
"Jazz" turned out be Jasmine, a stripper at the club he'd been frequenting. He got her knocked up and had to take two jobs to try and support them. Turns out the tips weren't that great with a big pregnant belly; who would have known?
The end.
Thank you to Kim Sumrall for the suggested words.
Much love,
Felicia

Short Story - The Accident
Pin It
It was a day like any other day. She'd woken up late, stumbled out of bed and been greeted by her cat as she stepped out of her bedroom. She didn't have to be at work that day, so she'd settled in front of the TV with some breakfast (if you could even still call it breakfast at that time of day).
Flicking through the channels, she was very happy when she came across one of her favourite movies. The phone rang just as she was getting into it, and she groaned as she reached for the phone to see who was calling. Who would it be? What would they want? She didn't really want to talk to anyone. She didn't recognize the number, and while she wouldn't usually have answered an unknown number, for some reason, that day she did.
The line was full of static, and she could barely make out the voice at the other end of the line. Through the crackling, she heard her own name, so she said "Yes, this is she". She felt like the male voice was familiar, but she struggled to hear it over all the noise, and she thought she understood that her father had just been in a car accident, and that he had died. The line went dead, and she stared at the phone in disbelief.
Tears instantly welled up in her eyes as she dialed the number to her parents home. Her mother answered on the first ring, and she burst into tears as she told her about the call she'd just received. Her mother was confused, told her that was impossible, her father hadn't even left for his road trip yet. In fact, he was just about to leave now.
Bewildered, relieved, spent, she started to sob uncontrollably, so the mother put her father on the line. He told her to sit still, he'd come see her before he left. He was there within minutes, and held his daughter for a long while, reassuring her that she was OK, and telling her it was just a horrible prank, probably by some teenager.
Feeling better, she hugged her father goodbye, compelling him to be careful on the road, and asking that he call her as soon as he arrived safely at his destination.
Exhausted by the roller coaster of emotions that she'd just been through, she settled back in front of TV, her cat jumping up to cuddle. There was still a half hour left to the movie she'd been watching, so she'd still get to see her favourite part.
Just as the scene was about to start, it was interrupted by a breaking news broadcast. She sat, incredulous, as live images of an estimated 50 car pile-up on the local highway flashed on the screen. There was a gas tanker involved, and the sound of it exploding and the subsequent explosions it caused completely drowned out the voices of the reporters in the helicopter.
She couldn't believe it. She knew exactly how long it took to get to the scene of the accident from her parents house, it was right before the exit where her high school sweetheart used to live, so she'd driven there a thousand times as a teenager. If she hadn't received that call, if she hadn't called her parents right as her father was leaving the house, he would have been part of that accident.
Chills ran down her spine as she realized that the voice that had seemed familiar was familiar. It was that of her dead grandfather, she was certain of it now. The doorbell rang, and her father was there, shaking, telling her he'd just heard the news on the radio and turned around. The highway would be closed for hours, he wouldn't be going anywhere today. When she told him that she was convinced the phone call had come from his father, he'd confessed to having dreamed about him the night before.
He'd never believed in ghosts, and wasn't sure what to believe now, but he sure was happy to be alive. He hugged his daughter tightly, and they both climbed into his car to go home. She'd started the day not wanting to speak to anyone, but now she wanted nothing more than to be in the company of those she loved the most.

Top five teasons why birthdays ROCK - especially mine! - Another illustrated short story by Felicia Stevenson

I know a lot of people hate birthdays, but I don't really understand why.
To help you understand why I think they are completely wrong, I've created a list of my top five reasons why birthdays ROCK, especially mine.
Reason #1 Why Birthdays ROCK, especially mine:
People are nice to you and show you love all day long, every where you go.
Granted, of course, that they know it's your birthday:
I've found that wearing an "it's my birthday" t-shirt and/or hat helps them to clue-in quicker.
Reason #2 Why Birthdays ROCK, especially mine:
I get to be Queen for the day. Even though I will be 33 this year, my mother still makes me ANY meal of my choosing. I usually ask for home made egg rolls or a turkey dinner. My mom's home made egg rolls are the best damn egg rolls I've ever tasted, hands down. I'm actually starting to drool as I think of them...
There's cake! And on my birthday, it's chocolate with chocolate sprinkles and chocolate fudge.
I don't think this point requires any further explanation, do you?

I recently bought a T-Shirt that had one of those really itchy tags that they now strangely put midway down your side, which, while not the subject of my post, really really bugs me by the way.
What was wrong with putting them on the back of the collar where they've always been? Don't they realize how sensitive and ticklish the skin on your side is?
Anyway,
If you speak any French at all, take a look at the washing instructions on the itchy tag in question and tell me if you see anything wrong with this:
Directly translated, "Suspendre à basse température" means "Hang at low temperature"
That seems awfully complicated to me.
Here, I've drawn you a picture of what I imagine that would look like:

These are things that make me Angry:
Since we're on the subject of stupidity, here's a short list of some of the dumbest things I've ever heard (these are just a few that come to mind, there are many, many, many more, it's very sad)
- Rainbows, lollipops and Unicorns (um, wait a second: that's not me, that's Kelly from Real Housewives of New York!
- Fireworks - in the sky or the bedroom ;)
- My kids smiles
- Sunny days by the pool
- An afternoon nap
- Sleeping in
- My Family and REAL friends
- People who appreciate me for all I am instead of what they think I should be
- Seeing my page visit and followers numbers grow!!! ;)
These are things that make me Angry:
"I think I might eat a small child for dinner argh argh argh"
- Liars
- Predators
- Fair weather friends (you know, people who only like you when you're doing something for them, and toss you aside whenever their done using you)
- My kids smiles when they're laughing and I'm steaming! (Makes me want to find new and creative ways to wipe that smile off their little faces... LOL)
- Dealing with Bell - especially Emily - or any other automated answering service
- Idiots that cut you off when you're driving, then give you S*** for honking at them (those people should be shot)
- Bad customer service (which is everywhere!!!!)
- People who judge what they don't understand
- Most of all, I hate stupidity, because you just can't fix dumb!
Since we're on the subject of stupidity, here's a short list of some of the dumbest things I've ever heard (these are just a few that come to mind, there are many, many, many more, it's very sad)
- "It's hard to be sympathetic to you as all of your Facebook posts have been positive" (because everyone should broadcast all of their problems on Facebook right?)
- "Does one half plus one half equal one or two?" (This was from a grown woman!)
- From the tech at Videotron "Certain channels on your PVR are not working because it is not correctly connected to the television"
- "Will the CD flip over on it's own?" from an old boyfriend. I know. Please just don't ask. LOL
- "How do I know when the gas tank will be full?" Same boyfriend. I know, I know! I'm not with him anymore am I?! A university education sure doesn't guarantee any common sense, lemme tell ya!
BUT!
When I start to feel like this:
When I start to feel like this:
"I think I might start breathing fire soon... argh argh argh!"
I try to remember that in dealing with other people, it helps to remember the three C's:
You didn't Cause it;
You can't Control it;
and
You can't Cure it!
And then I think to myself:
"Hey- it could me much worse - you could be one of them!"
And I start to I feel like this again.
