25 Ways Smart Phones Have Changed Our Lives (And Why You May Be Addicted To Yours)

As I was trying to write a post about signs that you may be addicted to your iPhone, I started to reflect instead on the reasons why we have become addicted to these devices that are often used more as mini laptops than as actual telephones.

The internet was commercialized in 1995, and changed the way the world interacts forever.  Twelve years later, the iPhone was introduced and changed our lives and the way we interact forever.  Many of these changes are great, but are they all?

Here are 25 ways smart phones and the internet have changed our lives: (For better or for worse)

Before we had the internet, iPhones and other smart phones:

1. To do research, you went to a library.
2. If you wanted to know the weather, you either watched the weather channel or walked over to your own thermometer.
3. If you wanted to pay a bill or make a transfer, you had to go to the bank.  (Not long before that, if you wanted to go shopping, you had to have cash or credit... debit didn't exist yet.)
4. If you wanted to play a video game, you had to have a gaming system or software installed on your computer.  (My first gaming system was an Atarri when I was 7)*
5. If you wanted to watch a television show, you had to have cable, and you had to either record it on your VCR or be home to watch it when it aired.  There were no apps or websites to get the latest episodes from, nor DVD box sets of TV series you could purchase.
6. To watch a movie, you had to have a television and a VCR.  You also had to have a VHS tape, which, if you wanted to rent one, you had to get from a video store. (Who remembers Jumbo Video?)
7. To find out what time it was, you had to tune in to the community channel, the weather channel, or check your watch. (Sales of which drop yearly as younger generations no longer wear them)
8. If you wanted to listen to music, you had to have a cassette player or CD player.  You had to purchase an entire album even if you only liked one song.  If you wanted portable music, you had to own a Walkman or a Discman.  If you didn't have a good quality Diskman, it was more like a Skipman.  Every step would make a song skip.
9. If you heard a song and couldn't figure out who it was by, you'd just go insane wondering.
10. To find out what happened to all your friends from high school, you had to hold a reunion.
11. You had to have a book to put all your contact's information in, but it wasn't called a contact list. It was called an address book.  What's more, none of the address's ended in .ca or .com.
12. You had to own a calculator.
13. To talk to your friends and or family, you had to use a telephone, or see them in person.
14. If you wanted to take pictures, you needed a camera.
15. If you wanted to make movies, you needed a video camera.
16. To draw, you needed paper... and a pencil.
17. You needed a notepad to make a shopping list.
18. If you kept a diary, it was on paper.
19. If you wanted to gamble, you had to leave your house. (If there was a "con's" column, this would definitely go there)
20. You had to call the theater or check the newspaper to find out what was playing and at what time.
21. You had to buy huge maps that were awkward to use and didn't give out directions or suggest alternate routes.
22. To shop, you had to use a catalog and phone-in your order or go to a store.  
23. You had to be in the same room as your friends to play a board game with them.
24. If you saw an actor you knew you'd seen in something else but couldn't quite place, you wouldn't be able to check IMDB, so you would invariably wake up at three AM shouting "It was Al Pacino!" triumphantly to a empty room or grumbly spouse.
25. You had to have a day planner to organize your calendar and keep track of your appointments.

Music is everything to me.  I'm not the best of singers, but I can usually carry a decent tune, and nothing calms my nerves more than losing myself in a song I love.

So here's my list, in no particular order:

Nicole Scherzinger fails to save Rachel Crow on X Factor

Pin It Watching The X Factor tonight was just devastating.

I was already broken hearted last week when we lost my favourite, Drew Ryniewicz.  This is a video of her first audition, when she won my heart and that of many others, I'm sure:

Tonight, in the bottom two, were Marcus Canty and Rachel Crow.  Now I like Marcus Canty well enough.  He has a good voice and smile.  But he doesn't move me, you know?

Now Rachel, well Rachel Crow is 12 years old.  This girl doesn't just sing, she sangs!  She was gracious and lovely, and when she was in the bottom two tonight, she did her very best to keep her chin up and swallow her tears.

The two of them had to sing for survival, and while Marcus' performance was good, hers was phenomenal... as you can see for yourself by watching this video of Rachel's save me song "I'd rather be blind".  Notice how moved Paula and Nicole seem to be.

While she had given quite a few noteworthy performances throughout, this was definitely her crowning moment. She gave that song every last bit of emotion she was feeling and it was bone chilling good.  You wouldn't think this was coming from a twelve year old pre-teen.  I'm sure everyone thought she would be saved, including Marcus Canty, who seemed completely defeated after her performance.

WELL!!! When the time came to vote, LA Reid obviously went with Marcus, and Simon Cowell with Rachel, Paula Abdul joined Simon and it all came down to Nicole Scherzinger.  She sat there blubbering and copped out, refusing to send Marcus home, knowing full well she should, and sent it to deadlock, so it would be decided by the votes.

I guess she thought for sure that with Marcus having been in the bottom two for three weeks in a row that he would be going home, but you saw her face crumple when the words hit her and she realized what she'd just done.

I'm not happy with her.  I think she failed to do her job and took the cowards way out, and didn't do anyone any favours by doing so.  Rachel is young and her career will go on, but Marcus Canty will now forever be remembered as the guy who should have been sent home instead of Rachel Crow.

As for Nicole Scherzinger, I think it will take a while before the haters calm themselves, despite the fact that she looked totally heartbroken when she heard the results.

According to Marc Malkin, she will be releasing a new solo album shortly and is slated to perform one song on an up-coming episode of X Factor.  In Marc's article, she's quoted as saying: "I have the song in mind, but I never know if I'm going to change my mind depending on how I'm feeling".

I wonder if there's an "I'm sorry I acted like a coward and failed to do my job" song on that album? 

Watching Rachel Crow crumple to the floor after being told she was eliminated was heart wrenching, but part of me feels bad for all the backlash Nicole's getting as well.

There was an article somewhere showing her facebook page, and all of the incredibly hateful messages she was receiving.  Apparently there were death threats last week with Drew, I imagine there will be more this week with Rachel.  It's all a bit too extreme for my liking.

Was it a horrible decision? Yes.  Should she have millions of people sending her hate mail?  No.  Maybe just her boss. :)

Inspiration Is a Fickle Creature

This is quite a Crazy/Beautiful world we live in.

Instead of loving thy neighbour, we tend to push each other down, unaffected by the heads we've stepped on to climb our way to the top.

With this being said, it is sometimes hard, for those of us who have chosen a different journey, to remain confident that we are on the right path when those who surround us either put down or fail to celebrate our achievements.

This post is all about celebrating you, and sharing some of the things that help keep me motivated when my inspiration seems to fail me and the darkness threatens to take over.



The Amazing Miss M, also known as Mariah Carey to non-superfans, wrote a song many years back called "Can't Take That Away From Me". The lyrics have made it one of my inner theme songs, one I can listen to when the haters start to get to me.

See I, I have learned, there's an inner peace I own, something in my soul that they can not possess. So I won't be afraid and the darkness will fade....

If you know in your heart that you're on the right route, don't let other people's darkness bring you down. I'm reminded of something that is said in wedding ceremonies: "What God has joined together, let no man tear apart" or something like that. This applies to your talents and inner light as well. God (or the universe) has joined them to you, so don't you let anyone take them from you.

A couple of funny/inspirational quotes I wanted to share. This first one is my absolute favourite, and I found it on a night I really needed to hear it:

Remember that while struggling with Bipolar disorder is very difficult, it does not define you. If anything, it is part of what makes us so beautiful. My Opinions Are Better Than Yours

OK, so this may come as a HUGE shock to you, but I've always been quite opinionated. I think this stems from the womb, where I was probably conceived just because I was the pushiest of all the eggs. (I know, totally not shocking, but let's move on...)

Anyway, I've often been accused of always thinking I'm right.  Well, you've got me there.  I do always think I'm right.

I just know you all gasped at how arrogant that sounded, but bear with me...

I am by no means trying to say that I'm never wrong, or that I haven't ever done anything wrong.  Believe me, that is far from the case.  I am painfully aware of most of my flaws and mistakes.

So with that out of the way, let's get back to the point:

Yes, of course, I always *think* I'm right. I actually find the statement quite ludicrous.  Who would choose the wrong opinion on purpose???

Well, I feel strongly that that I should vote for candidate x, but I'm going to vote for candidate y... just to spite myself.

Surrrre... that makes perrrrfect sense.  (she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm)

The thing is, if we got into an argument in the first place, it's because we both think we're right.  We wouldn't be arguing if we didn't, duh!

It's not that I can't be swayed, but usually I won't really argue a point unless I know enough about it, so as to avoid the previously mentioned dreaded egg on my face...

Which means that if I've decided to argue a point, it's due to the fact that I feel very strongly that mine is the righteous opinion.  I didn't come to this conclusion willy-nilly, so if you want to change my mind, don't come at me with willy-nilly arguments.  If you can make a point I hadn't thought of, I will definitely weigh it, and it may even sway me to your side.

Until then, does your opinion have value?  Sure it does!  Is it better than mine?  No way!

So why do I think my opinions are better than yours?  Because they are mine, of course. (please don't unfollow me) 

I must say, I find myself wanting to avoid arguments as I grow older.  They are bad for my blood pressure and sometimes it's OK to just agree to disagree. ;)

Breaking Dawn and It Will Rain by Bruno Mars

Pin It When I heard this song on the radio last week, I jumped straight to my iPhone to download it...

I'm starting to really like this Bruno Mars guy... I really enjoyed "The Lazy Song", and I just loved "Grenade" and "Just the Way you Are".

It Will Rain is from the new movie in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.  The first three verses make me think of my boys.  I don't think anything could save me if they ever left me. 

It turns in to a song about a bad boy trying to keep the girl.. how à propos... You Tube won't let me upload the full song video, but I though this excerpt was very good, and shows us peaks at the new Breaking Dawn movie.

25 Ways to Wear a Scarf in 4.5 Minutes!

Pin It I love wearing scarves, but I'm always wondering how to tie them, asides from the obvious loops around the neck. I mean hey, if you've ever read Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella, you know that the right scarf can even become part of your identity... such as The Girl in the Green Scarf... kidding, of course.

This video I received by email illustrates twenty-five different ways to wear a scarf.  The video itself is quite entertaining, and goes well with my tutorial on how to wear slouch boots, where I mentioned that it was recommended to balance out the heaviness of the boot by adding some bulk at the top... with a heavy knit sweater or you guessed it... a scarf! The right scarf* can help to complete an outfit, and the right coloured one for you can really make your eyes pop, and be quite flattering.  

Wendy Slookbook shares 25 different ways to tie your scarf in 4.5 minutes:

If you're looking for tips on which colours to choose, here are a few suggestions:

• If your eyes are green, try going with a purple shade, or any shade of green. 
• For blues eyes, dark blues, and turquoise will make them sparkle. 
• For brown, eyes, think orange tones, also very in this season. They will bring out the lighter flecks and make your brown eyes sparkle. 
• Pink tones are good with all complexions, creating a glow in the face.

Scarves of all styles are in, but it's imperative to pair them with the right outfit.  A bulky, heavy knit scarf should be worn with a heavy sweater or jacket, being cautious not to add too much bulk, to avoid creating football player shoulders. Choose lighter, silk type scarves to wear with a work outfit or light raincoat.

It's important to remember that fashion is about personal style though, not just trends. Whatever you choose to wear, make sure it suits you, and that you're not just wearing it because it's "trendy"... you'll just cringe at the pictures ten years down the road.

The New iPhone 4S: 5 Reasons Why I'm Not Impressed

The original 2G iPhone was released in 2007, and in close to five years, there have been as many generations of this smartphone.

Now, while I own an iPhone 3GS only because my phone company gave it to me for free, I do have to say that I'm a converted believer.  I love my iPhone, it's the best thing since the internet and sliced bread.

That being said, I feel like Apple is laughing at us as consumers.

I suspect that they had this planned from the beginning.  "We'll just keep releasing new versions with incremental improvements so that people keep buying the same product over and over again"

No wonder they're freaking rich.

A tribute to sand art - and the human mind.

I "stumbled" upon this video while surfing the net the other day... it's rather long but quite amazing!

I can't imagine putting so much energy into something that would be washed away by the ocean or blown away by the wind, but his passion is intoxicating, it's almost as if he's in a trance: every move calculated, every step coordinated.  Quite extraordinary! 

I think most people will have already seen this one, but it wouldn't be a tribute to sand art without sharing this one.  It's the first of this genre I ever saw, the story she tells about a soldier going off to war and his young wife is beautiful, and the music makes it all very very powerful.  Enjoy!


It never ceases to amaze me what artists are capable of.  Talk about creating something from nothing.  We see beauty where others only see trash.

In case you're enjoying this just as much as I am, here's one last one that I think is worth sharing  the use of the different coloured bulbs in the light box make for an interesting effect.

Top 5 movies that will make you cry like a baby

Well, maybe that's just me.  But surely you'll shed a tear or two.

You just might be heartless if you don't. ;)

1. My Girl

I was only 13 years old when this 1991 production came along.  The star studded cast, with Dan Aykroyd, Jamie Lee Curtis, Macaulay Culkin and then newcomer Anna Chlumsky, was wonderful.  It's a beautiful coming of age story, and it ends well, but when Thomas J, played by Culkin dies, and the young Veda (played by Chlumsky) loses it at his funeral, well I sobbed.  I didn't just tear up a little bit.  I'm talking waterfalls and heaving.  "Wake up, Thomas J, let's go climb a tree...Where are his glasses?  He can't see without his glasses!..."  To this day, I still can't watch that scene without losing it.

2. A Little Princess

A remake of the Shirley Temple classic, this is a story about a young girl sent to live at boarding school while her father goes off to war.  But when her father dies, she's forced to become a slave in the school where she was once one of the richest girls in attendance.  It's a beautiful movie, very visually stimulating, with a few magical scenes.  The scene at the end, where she finds her father alive and he doesn't recognize her, tore my heart out.  "Daddy!!! Daddy, it's me!  Don't you recognize me!?" More heaving, more sobbing...

Having seen both versions, I definitely recommend the newer production.  Shirley Temple was really cute, but she wasn't much of an actress, at least not by today's standards.  

Top 10 Chick Flicks Ever - Well, According to me Anyway...

Pin It When creating this list I asked myself:  what are the common qualities that make a chick flick great?

• Obviously, you need a heroine we will like, and a hunk we will want, but that goes without saying, now doesn't it?

• I think as a common theme to most of my choices, the soundtrack is crucial.  The music has to be amazing, and perfectly harmonized to the emotions being portrayed.  A musical montage helps a lot, especially if it includes shopping or many costume changes, and dancing is also good.

• If the woman is at some point empowered, or gets to "stick it" to a man who's done her wrong, all the better. 

All of or a selection of the criteria above is important, but the storyline is crucial.  The love story needs to be amazing, complicated, funny, and, most importantly: it must end well.

When all of these elements come together in the perfect combination, well, the right chick flick can leave us feeling almost euphoric, stronger, even more hopeful for the future.

Anyway... without further ado, here are My Top 10 Choices for the Best Chick Flicks Ever (in no particular order):

1. Pretty Woman
This, to me, was the original chick flick.  This movie had it all:  a beautiful love story, an amazing soundtrack along with a great shopping montage, the most amazing date you could ever imagine, diamonds, and an amazing ending, what more could a girl want?

 I was only about 11 years old when I saw it in the theatre.  I ended up renting it about 30 times before my sister bought it for me for Christmas one year, tired of seeing me spend money on it.

2. Dirty Dancing
I must have been about 14 years old before I ever saw this one.  This is the actual original chick flick.  Music, dance, costumes, love: it's got it all; even Patrick Swayze, all young and hot looking.  I think the part I liked best about this movie was that Baby wasn't too much of a looker.  It made a girl hopeful, you know, that even if she wasn't the prettiest, maybe she could get the hot guy.

3. Raising Helen
This little gem with Kate Hudson also features hunky John Corbett, whom you may remember as Aidan from Sex and the City.  When her sister dies suddenly, single girl played by Kate inherits her three children, and her life of course, is turned completely upside down.  In comes Pastor Dan (played by Corbett) to save the day.  With Hayden Pannetiere and a very young Abigail Breslin, the kids just stole my heart.

4. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
Ladies, if you haven't seen this yet, it's high time you do.  Especially if you're single, because you might just find out why you are from watching this film.  Kate Hudson graces us again with her dazzling smile, but this time her co-star is the MEGA HOT Matthew McConaughey! The storyline is hilarious, and their chemistry is amazing: this is definitely a "must-watch" film!

How to: Water Marble Nail Art

As an artist, the world is my canvas.

I love to create beauty everywhere I look, and that includes myself.

To me, hair, make-up, nail colours, clothing, shoes, coats, hats, purses, etc. are all tools to be used in creating a work of art: the perfect look.

I am a girly girl for sure, and am forever fascinated by both fashion and style.

While surfing youtube the other day, I came across a series of videos by this girl showing really cool effects that can be done with nail polish.

This one really caught my attention:

Her creativity is astonishing, isn't it? 

 I'd really like to know who came up with this idea in the first place and how!!!

Of course, I just had to try it out, check out my results below:

I must say: this was very time consuming! (two base coats, taping each finger, the water coat, two top coats and considerable curing time for such a thick application - 5 coats if you're counting!)

Total time: almost two hours!!!

The results do speak for themselves though, it looks like a professional manicure, and I'm quite pleased.  Probably for special occasions only, but it's a cool trick to know for sure!

I did my thumbs and index fingers with the recommended white base coats, but I did a pink base on all my other nails.  I then only used the pink, purple and silver as my design colours. The pictures don't really show the designs on the darker nails, but they look pretty cool as well.
